Krasnodar joins the ranks of the wealthiest cities of Russia

According to Financial University affiliated to the government of the RF, Kuban capital ranks among the richest cities of the country. The study was carried out on the basis of interviews of citizens.

— The data is based on citizens’ self-assessment of their own income. During the study all interviewees were to assess their welfare on 5-point scale where “5” means that their income allows buying real estate and “1” —  finances are scarcely enough for food.  Based on received data social scientists have calculated the poverty index for cities - the study participants, — authors of the rating commented.

The study was carried out in 35 biggest cities of Russia with population of more than 500 thousand people in 2014. In the final table all cities were ranked according to the poverty index – from the highest to the lowest. So, the lower in the table one or another city is, the more affluent its citizens are.

The top five problematic Russian cities are Togliatti, Astrakhan, Penza, Volgograd and Saratov. These cities are followed by Rostov-on-Don, Lipetsk, Barnaul, Naberezhnye Chelny and Voronezh.

As specified in the rating the wealthiest citizens of Russia are in Vladivostok, Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Kazan and Tyumen. These cities close the list. The top ten the wealthiest Russian cities also includes Krasnodar, St. Petersburg, Orenburg, Irkutsk and Novosibirsk.

Along with that, researchers mark that the overall situation in Russia is constantly getting better. According to provided figures over the last 11 years number of poor people in the country has reduced by more than 3 times: in 2014 part of the population considering their quality of life as unacceptably low was 11% as against 37% in 2003.

The poverty level was also influenced by currency rate rise. According to the data from the study, against this background 54% of residents in big and medium-sized cities identify themselves as lower-income people. And barely 4% citizens of Russia aged from 18 to 30 classify themselves as extremely poor ones.
