Vladimir Evlanov: Memorial to and remembrance of Lavr Kornilov gives rise to a new boulevard in Krasnodar

Today ceremonial event took place in the capital of Kuban as part of traditional Day of Remembrance of Kornilov. It is coincided with the 97th anniversary of the day of Volunteer Army commander’s death. More than 3 thousand citizens came to honour memory of the victims of Civil War.

— The remembrance arrangements occur at this historical place for the third time. It is the place where almost 100 years ago a prominent scientist, General and patriot of his Fatherland Lavr Kornilov was killed.  Looking back to those tragic occurrences we see how it was terrible when one brother came against another brother, when one compatriot shot in another compatriot. There is no other more unjust and tragic war than a civil war is. Today it is especially felt. The flame and horror of fratricidal slaughter should never happen again, — Vladimir Evlanov said.

Head of Krasnodar told Cossacks, citizens and guests of the city who came to this mourning event about plans to create a boulevard on the place of Lavr Kornilov’s death, to restore the house where he was deadly wounded and to construct a chapel. This year a little garden square is formed here as the first part of future boulevard. Specialists have planted trees and bushes, fulfilled works on the construction of street and area lighting, installed small-scale architectural forms. There will be a fully-featured park.

Even now the place has wide popularity among citizens — various excursions come here and the memorial is also visited by guests of the city. The monument is gradually becoming a landmark for the Cossacks city. It cultivates patriotic upbringing of the younger generation and teach young people to honour memory of heroes who has fought and fallen for the prosperity and unity of our country, — Vladimir Evlanov said.

Ceremonial event was participated by first deputy ataman of Kuban Cossacks Army, Cossack Colonel Nikolay Pervakov, first deputy chairman of Krasnodar City Duma Victor Timofeev, deputy Head of Krasnodar Sergey Vasin, deputies of Krasnodar Region Legislative Assembly and Krasnodar City Duma, representatives of general public, youth, pupils of Cossack classes and cadet corps.

Funeral litiya for murdered warriors was served by military priest of Kuban Cossacks Army, beneficiary of St. Pokrovsky temple archpriest Ioannes (Garmash).

Anthems of Russia, Kuban and Krasnodar were also played.

All gathered people observed a minute of silence in tribute to the memory of those who had lost their lives, laid flowers and wreaths to the monument. Marching in review Cossack corps passed before the monument.

The event was finished with a concert performed by artists of Krasnodar Philharmonic Hall and traditional Cossack competitions.

The decision to create the memorial complex was taken at the initiative of Krasnodar Mayor Vladimir Evlanov in 2011.

The monument itself was made by Krasnodar sculptors Valery Pchelin and Alan Kornaev and was opened on October 13, 2013 to the address Kalinina Street, 100 near the house where General Kornilov was deadly wounded in 1918.
