Ecological rating has been drawn up by order of Ministry for the Protection of the Environment and Natural Resources of the Russian Federation. Apart from Krasnodar, among leaders are Moscow, Gorno-Altaisk, Voronezh and Perm.
— Annual ecological rating is the most reliable and transparent strategic tool contributing to the improving of environmental protection activity within cities and constituent entities of the country, — organizers commented.
Ecological state of cities of Russia has been estimated by seven categories:
- Atmosphere
- Water consumption and quality of water
- Waste handling
- Transport
- Energy consumption
- Environmental impact management
In the overall rankings according to the indicator of atmosphere quality Krasnodar took the fourth place, the city is third in “environmental impact management” and is in 10th position by “energy consumption”.
Deputy Minister for the Protection of the Environment and Natural Resources of the Russian Federation Rinat Gizatulin emphasized that favourable atmosphere and water consumption situation is generally observed in almost all cities. Transport is also good as well as the situation with urban land use and energy consumption.
Methods of estimating comprised issues of environment protection and considered international recommendations and other ratings of the sphere made all over the world. At that, the rating itself and methods of estimating conform to international analogues and criteria of Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
Totally 94 cities were involved in rating 2014. Besides capital cities of all constituent entities of the RF, cities of federal significance, additionally 9 cities took part in the rating: Vyborg, Glazov, Yevpatoria, Yelets, Mozhga, Nefteyugansk, Ramenskoe, Sarapul and Surgut.
