The rally and laying of flowers to the Memorial Arch "Kuban is proud of them" in the garden square of Marshall Zhukov became a central event of the day. Other 16 people were solemnly added in the list of heroes, whose names are marked on the plates of the memorial. The event was attended by the Mayor of Krasnodar Evgeny Pervyshov and Chairwoman of the City Duma Vera Galushko.
"For those who are alive it is important to know the history of their country and to remember well the heroes of the Fatherland, who walked along the same streets as we do. And then no one will be able to force us to renounce our cultural values and folk traditions. We will honor the great past of our nation," said Governor of Kuban Veniamin Kondratiev when speaking at the meeting.
The solemn event was also attended by the Chairman of Krasnodar Region Legislative Assembly Yuri Burlachko, honorary citizen of the city, the pilot-cosmonaut Gennady Padalka, cadets of military universities, the Presidential Cadet College, students, schoolchildren, soldiers of the National Guard, representatives of the Cossacks, clergy and public organizations.
Among the honored guests at the ceremony in Krasnodar were the Heroes of the Soviet Union and the Heroes of the Russian Federation. Each of the 19 famous townsmen were named one by one.
The choice of the rally venue was not made by chance. The Arch "Kuban is proud of them" is dedicated to the Heroes of the Fatherland.
Names of Heroes of the Soviet Union, Full Cavaliers of the Order of Glory, Heroes of the Russian Federation, and also Heroes of Socialist Labour and Full Cavaliers of the Order of Labour Glory - native-born people of Kuban are engraved on 16 marble slabs here.
On December 9, 2017, other 16 names of Kuban people, awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation, appeared in the golden list of heroes.
The participants of the rally honored the memory of the fallen heroes with a minute of silence. The ceremony of laying real flowers to the Memorial Arch was held under the musical composition "From the heroes of old-time" from the film "Officers".
This commemorative date of the December 9 — the Day of the Fatherland's Heroes — was established in Russia 10 years ago. In the Russian Empire, until the October Revolution 1917, December 7 was celebrated as the Day of Knights of the Order of St. George.
The Arch "Kuban is proud of them" was created in Krasnodar in the 60s of XX century. Its author is Honored Architect of the Russian SFSR Robert Railov.
The architectural composition was updated in the mid-90s by the Honored artist of Russia, sculptor Alexander Apollonov and architect Leonid Kovtun.
The equestrian sculpture of St. George The Victorious was mounted on the top of the arch, and before it on a granite pedestal they installed the bust of the commander of Victory Georgy Zhukov.
