On Saturday, February 3, citizens of different ages, professions and beliefs came together to Pushkin Square to express the respect and support of the Russian athletes at the Winter Olympic Games in Korea.
"At any tournament athletes with full dedication protect the honor and pride of their country, sometimes the price of victory is too high, but athletes are the people who pull off a win through pain, they get over themselves for the sake of their homeland. At the Olympics in Korea, as never before the Russian athletes are in need of an important support of all us, sports fans. We are one country — one team," said the Olympic champion in trampoline gymnastics, the Deputy of Legislative Assembly of Krasnodar Region Irina Karavaeva.
The head coach of the women's national handball team Evgeny Trefilov, who brought in the native land the gold medal of the Olympic Games of Rio de Janeiro in 2016, addressed the citizens with a call to root for the Russians, mentally to help them and believe in our athletes till the end.
Among the attendees of the rally in Krasnodar were also a famous basketball player Alexey Savrasenko and participant of the Olympics in Sochi bobsledder Alexey Pushkarev.
On behalf of all the relatives of the athletes who know firsthand what efforts their children exert to gain the victory, European champion in gymnastics Daria Skrypnik's mother — Maria Skrypnik spoke to the people gathered at the square.
The position of the student movement was presented by deputy head of the Krasnodar city branch of "Young Guard" of the United Russia party Margarita Braginets.
The rally was attended by representatives of youth, professional and veteran movements and organizations, trainees of sports institutions and clubs, political parties, the All-Russian People's Front and the Public Chamber of Krasnodar Region and Krasnodar, school children and students.
The concert program was presented by creative collectives of the capital of Kuban: the ensemble of Cossack song "Krinitsa", the state concert song and dance ensemble "Kuban Cossacks Volnitsa", show-group "Confeti", "Music quarter" and others.
At the end of the rally participants were released into the sky about two thousand balloons in the colors of the Russian tricolor.
The XXIII Winter Olympic Games will be held from 9 to 25 February 2018 in the South Korean city of Pyeongchang. 169 Russian athletes received invitation from the International Olympic Committee to take part in the Olympics. They will take part in such sports as biathlon, bobsleigh, skeleton, alpine skiing, curling, speed skating, Nordic combination, Luge, snowboarding, figure skating, freestyle skiing, women's and men's hockey and short-track. The Russians will compete in Pyeongchang under a neutral flag and in uniform with the inscription Olympic athlete from Russia.
